About Kyla

Kyla Zabala is a passionate writer, director, professor, and editor who has been immersed in theatre from a young age. Her journey began with Fiddler on the Roof at the age of fourteen and has since grown to include over sixty productions. A Radford University graduate with degrees in English and Theatre, Kyla co-founded New River Stage and served as Artistic Director. After relocating to Richmond, she taught English and Theatre at Henrico, directing standout shows like In the Heights, which enjoyed a professional run at Firehouse Theatre. Currently, Kyla is an adjunct professor of English and Communications at two local colleges, where she continues to inspire students with her innovative, real-life-centered teaching approach. Her dedication has earned her the R.E.B. Award for Excellence in Teaching and a spot among Henrico Citizen's Top 20 teachers. With recent Master’s degrees in English and Screenwriting and an ongoing MFA in Creative Writing, Kyla blends her theatrical and academic experiences to craft compelling stories. When she’s not on stage or writing, she loves sipping coffee, diving into books, and staying engaged in her academic pursuits.
